BROWN SUGAR SHAKEN ESPRESSO
This delicious Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso is an easy-to-make homemade version of the popular Starbucks Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso. This homemade Starbucks copycat recipe combines freshly brewed espresso, rich brown sugar, a hint of warm cinnamon, vanilla syrup, sea salt, and creamy milk for the perfect iced coffee drink. Customize it with your favorite dairy or non-dairy milk.
Ingredients
Instructions
- To a small mason jar - 8 ounce (12 ounce mason jar, or small cocktail shaker), add brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Make espresso directly into the jar to help dissolve the sugar. Once espresso is made, add a few ice cubes (3-4 small), cover tightly with lid, and shake vigorously.
- For a frothy iced latte (see Note #3 for Quick & Easy Method), use a handheld electric milk frother. To a tall narrow measuring cup or glass, add milk of choice, and vanilla syrup, and blend together with an electric frother until mixed and frothy.
- Fill a tall glass (16 ounce) with ice, add vanilla syrup, and shaken espresso. Slowly pour milk of choice directly over ice. Serve with a reusable straw, stir, and enjoy!
Notes
- Prefer your lattes a little less sweet? Adjust the sweetness of the vanilla syrup by reducing it to ½ tablespoon. If you like it even less sweet, omit the vanilla syrup and replace with ¼ teaspoon vanilla bean paste, and add to your milk of choice. Using a handheld milk frother, blend until combined a little frothy. Pour over ice.
- For dairy options, use whole milk or 2% milk. For non-dairy options, this latte is best with unsweetened vanilla almond milk, Taché unsweetened barista pistachio milk, or my Homemade Oat Milk. If using my oat milk recipe and you are adding Medjool dates to sweeten the milk, then replace the vanilla syrup in this latte recipe with ¼ teaspoon vanilla bean paste. Otherwise, it will make this latte too sweet.
- Quick & Easy Method: To create a latte without froth, add the milk and vanilla syrup directly to your 16 ounce serving glass, and stir. Add ice, and pour the frothy espresso mixture directly over ice, stir, and enjoy!
- Makes one 8.5 ounce serving (16 ounces with ice).

Homemade Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso – Even Better Than Starbucks!
Skip the coffee shop and make this delicious Homemade Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso, a Starbucks copycat recipe that's even better than the original! I decided to make my version of this drink using freshly brewed espresso, rich brown sugar, a touch of warm cinnamon, vanilla syrup, creamy milk, and a pinch of sea salt to bring out the flavors and balance the sweetness. This iced coffee drink delivers the perfect blend of bold coffee flavor and natural sweetness. Shaking the espresso with brown sugar and ice creates a wonderfully frothy, chilled espresso with a smooth, velvety finish.
The best part? You can make this popular coffee shop favorite right in your own kitchen, customize the sweetness, choose your favorite milk (make it with dairy or non-dairy milk), and enjoy a freshly made iced espresso whenever the craving strikes. It's an easy, delicious, and budget-friendly way to bring your favorite coffee shop experience home!
Whether you choose organic whole milk or 2% milk, oat milk, almond milk, macadamia nut milk, or your favorite dairy-free alternative, this homemade shaken espresso is easy to customize. Choose the milk you love most and enjoy a deliciously creamy iced coffee made just the way you like it.
How do you ensure the best results from this recipe?
My 5 tips to making this Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso:
Make a strong, double shot espresso.
Add the brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt to the small mason jar. Then make (or pour) your hot espresso directly into the mason jar. The hot espresso helps dissolve the brown sugar.
Don’t skip the ice in the mason jar. This helps cool down the mixture, as well as combine the ingredients. Be sure to shake vigorously to combine everything and create a nice froth.
Whether it be dairy milk or non-dairy milk, use your favorite. As a dairy free choice, I prefer almond milk or oat milk for this recipe. If using dairy milk, my preference is 2% milk.
Froth the milk and vanilla syrup together using an electric handheld milk frother. This combines everything well and creates a little froth to add to the decadence.
It’s time to customize and Pimp My Recipe.
Pimp My Recipe:
Make it Less Sweet: This Starbucks coffee recipe is a very sweet coffee drink. If you prefer it less sweet, simply reduce or omit the amount of vanilla syrup.
Reducing Sweetness: Use only ½ tablespoon vanilla syrup, and adjust as needed.
Even Less Sweet: Omit the vanilla syrup and replace with ¼ teaspoon of pure vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste, add to your milk of choice, and froth. This adjustment will provide the vanilla flavor without the added sweetness.
Make it Extra Rich & Creamy: To a tall narrow measuring cup or glass, add milk of choice, vanilla syrup, and 1-2 tablespoons of heavy whipping cream, and blend together using a handheld electric milk frother, until combined and very frothy. Add ice to your serving glass, pour in the espresso mixture, and pour the milk/cream mixture directly over ice. Stir and enjoy!

Footnote: Remember to vigorously shake the espresso, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt together in the mason jar with ice.
Adapted from the Starbucks Brown Sugar Oat Milk Shaken Espresso, I developed my own Starbucks copycat recipe that is so addicting that it’s hard to skip a day of making this drink! Some of my taste testers have even said it’s better than the original Starbucks drink!
